Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Lorna and Herb sat up with May and listened to the whole horrible tale. ā€œThis is the end,ā€ May said. ā€œIt really is. I canā€™t do anything for him, he wonā€™t let me do anything for him, and he wonā€™t do anything for himself. Thereā€™s nothing that can be done, nothing.ā€
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ā€œMay,ā€ said Herb, ā€œlet me try just one thing.ā€ He took her hands and squeezed them. ā€œHear me out, May,ā€ he said. ā€œHear me out. My father was a failure, you know. He lost everything in cork furniture. When he knew he was ruined, that there wasnā€™t any hope, he sank into a chair. He wouldnā€™t get out of that chair, just sat there. He wouldnā€™t leave it except, well, you know.ā€
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā May smiled despite herself.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ā€œLet me go to see Garth,ā€ said Herb. ā€œLet me go to see him alone, and tell him the whole story about my father. Maybe if he sees someone elseā€™s mistake, he can benefit from it.ā€
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Herb went to see Garth, but he didnā€™t say anything about his father. He found Garth at Nosyā€™s, and when Garth suggested that Herb have a drink with him, Herb said, ā€œGee, Garth, itā€™s pretty early in the day for me.ā€ From his pocket he pulled what looked like a pocket watch. He flipped the case open and said, ā€œOops, wrong one.ā€
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ā€œSay, what is that?ā€ asked Garth. He leaned across the table.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ā€œThis?ā€ said Herb. ā€œOh, sort of a toy.ā€ Herb had never before taken such a risk. He had never even shown a piece of coarse goods to anyone he knew. He winked. He extended the Watchcase Wonder toward Garth and began turning the stem slowly. ā€œJust look at the workmanship,ā€ he said. Garth watched, amazed. ā€œYou think you could sell these, Garth?ā€
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Garth lifted his eyes from the animated couple and looked at Herb. He was wearing a twisted grin, and in his eyes, behind the blankness that had settled there, Herb could see an ambitious gleam.

ā€œNOW, HEREā€™S THE WAY I SEE IT,ā€ Herb said on the trip to Boston. ā€œSince the dealershipā€™s open again, you ought to come back. Start selling Studebakers again.ā€
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Garth drew back from him and looked at Herb with suspicion.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ā€œSure,ā€ said Herb. ā€œYouā€™ve got to. Youā€™ve got to have something else to sell besides this stuff. When I first started, it was books. For you it might as well be Studebakers.ā€
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ā€œWhy?ā€ asked Garth.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ā€œWell,ā€ said Herb, ā€œThe Studebakers are your answer.ā€
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ā€œAnswer to what?ā€ asked Garth.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ā€œTo the question, ā€˜Howā€™d you make all that money?ā€™ā€‰ā€ said Herb. They burst into invigorating laughter, hopeful laughter.
