MATTHEW TIPTOES into the living room with a pillow for Liz. He slips it under her head. For a moment he stands beside the couch, looking at her. He thinks of caressing her while she sleeps, then feels ashamed of the thought and goes to bed.
MATTHEW IS DRIFTING off to sleep, wearing a grin, feeling oddly self-satisfied, not at all disappointed. Though he didn’t make love to Belinda while Liz was in the room, he did kiss and caress her while Liz was right there, and that’s something. He has tasted exotic, unfamiliar pleasures, and he’s content with that. Thunk. Now what’s that? A small sound, a hollow thunk. It’s Liz, bumping into his bedroom door. Liz. She slides into bed with him, making an odd sound, deep in her throat, that might be a growl or might be a chuckle. Matthew’s too besotted to be sure which. Liz. She approaches him without coyness or reticence, hungrily, even roughly. She throws the covers off him and straddles him. She grabs his testicles and squeezes them, grabs his penis and pokes it into her. She makes love to him with unfamiliar vigor, pushing at him, thrusting at him almost violently, and she doesn’t say a word, doesn’t make a sound. She’s acting as if she has something to prove. Was she really asleep in the living room, or did she hear me and Belinda? Did that excite her? When she’s finished, she rolls off Matthew and falls asleep against him, lying on his arm. He snags the sheet and quilt with his toes and pulls them up until he can grab them with his other hand. Carefully, so that he doesn’t wake her, he pulls the covers over both of them. He kisses her, just below her ear, settles back, and is soon asleep.
