The names of daring adolescents were painted all over the sphere, those of more recent generations obscuring those of boys who had long ago become men and, in some cases, legends. Largest of all, still discernible in fat black letters beneath the newer names, running all the way around the sphere, was BLACK JACQUES LEROY . . .

This could be a photograph of the Babbington water tower taken shortly after Black Jacques Leroy painted his name on it. It is not a photograph of the Babbington water tower taken shortly after Black Jacques Leroy painted his name on it, but it could be, if the water container were in the shape of an oblate sphere and the painted name were black against the metallic skin of the water container.
